Mezzotint is a three hundred year old process of working the surface of a copper plate rough and then smooth so that the rough areas hold tone and the smooth areas are lighter. Werger began working in the medium in the 1980’s at a time when the medium started to have a revival of interest around the world.

He is the most prolific artist in the medium, having created over 400 mezzotints. He received the Award for the Correspondence of Imagery and Technique at the First International Mezzotint Festival in Russia in 2011 and the Grand Prix at the Third International Mezzotint Festival in 2015.
