Portfolio - Submerged

Narrative close upFrom Krishna

The submerged series redefines intaglio printing. In this series, Werger challenged all of the presuppositions of the medium that had informed his work until that point. While his earlier work was dark, mysterious, hard edged and urban in theme, the submerged series is light, bright and colorful in mood and theme.

Taking cues from watercolor painting and pastel, these images are intense, soft and fluid. Swimmers are engulfed in a swirl of water that dissolve their bodily forms into abstraction. Still, themes of voyeurism and intrusion tie the work to earlier content. While the aerial works are informed with a sense of vertigo, the underwater scenes have a subtext of claustrophobia.
